Born and bred in Adelaide, DJ Smiley (aka Andrew Peters) has been spinning tunes at pubs, clubs, festivals and functions for the last 20 years. Always a fan of funky dancefloor tracks, his sets span the last six decades and take in everything from funk, groove, soul and hip hop to indie, rock, dance and house. Performing as both a party DJ playing the hits people need, and as a venue DJ dropping unique sounds to curious ears has given Smiley a broad insight into how to read a crowd.
But what sets Smiley apart from the many DJs in the industry, is his devotion to editing and remixes. Almost every tune he plays has been finessed in the studio beforehand in some way – shortened, lengthened, rearranged or elements added. Smiley does this to ensure a smooth flow between tracks, that certain songs don’t outstay their welcome and to create the best possible vibe overall.
Smiley specialises in playing venues such as Hotels and Bars, where a mix of styles and tempos work best to appeal to a broad range of patrons. The fact that he has held numerous long-term residencies shows that he is able to do this well. Smiley prides himself on making natural progressions between genres and eras to create a fluid listening experience, rather than sudden, jarring drops and scattergun selections.
Smiley can spin a GROOVE set that draws from his extensive experience playing the venues of Adelaide. Expect a funky blend of new and old soul, roots, disco, hip hop, house and indie dance. Of course, you can also book Smiley to play a pure PARTY set, and you’ll get a great mix of up-to-date Top 40, dance, R&B tracks and radio hits, along with plenty of retro favourites spanning the 60s-00s
